The P-Springy is a pneumatic valve return spring (US Patent 6,745,738) that replaces conventional coil valve springs on existing cylinder heads. It is a product that, while eliminating all of the problem-ridden properties of traditional coiled wire valve springs, also avoids the vast complexity and extreme high costs (and unavailability) that are related to Formula One's approach. Purpose-built alloy cylinder heads that employ drilled air passages, 'engine air' lubrication systems, dynamic housing bores, exotic materials and complicated valve stem seals are all costly attributes of current F1 engine valve train hardware. A visit to the US Patent Trade Office Web Site will reveal several examples of the internal makeup of relatively recent F1 engines. In these normally well-guarded cross-sectional engine drawings, it is easy to notice just how many challenges the F1 engine designers face with their development programs.
